Naming roads and places

Murrindindi Shire Council is a Naming Authority under the Geographic Names Act and is the first point of contact for adding or changing names for places, features and roads within the Shire boundaries. In Victoria, any person or group can initiate a change to an existing name or propose a new name.  This applies to roads, reserves, geographic features, bridges and so on. Council provides the process for naming proposals and manages the updating of maps.

The naming process is governed by our Draft Naming Roads and Places Policy and has some specific guidelines for Murrindindi Shire which reflect our community needs and history.

The Naming Rules

The Naming Rules for places in Victoria 2022 are the statewide guidelines for naming authorities and provides standardised naming conventions and clear naming procedures to be followed by all proposals. Any naming proposal must conform with these guidelines.

Making a Naming Proposal

Community members and organisations are welcome to submit naming proposals directly to Council by emailing assets@murrindindi.vic.gov.au.

Under the Act, all proposals, even for correcting misspellings or names, must be written. They should include the reason for the proposal, background details, the proposer’s contact information, and proof of community support.

Fo more information or to discuss a naming proposal, contact Council by calling (03) 5772 0333 or emailing assets@murrindindi.vic.gov.au
