Running a home-based business
A home based business is an occupation carried out in a dwelling, or on the land surrounding a dwelling, by a resident of the dwelling.
Council strongly encourages economic development within the Shire, including home based businesses, but needs to ensure that these businesses comply with the provisions of the Planning Scheme. The controls in these provisions are consistent state-wide.
The purpose of the Home Based Business Policy (Clause 52.11 of the Murrindindi Planning Scheme) is to ensure that businesses do not have an adverse effect on other residents in the area. Not all types of businesses are suitable to be home based, such as motor mechanic workshops, timber yards, storage depots and manufacturing activities.
You can contact us on (03) 5772 0333 or via email at planning@murrindindi.vic.gov.au, to discuss the requirements in relation to your proposal.
When is a permit required?
In some instances a planning permit is required. Please see sections 52.11-1 and 52.11-2 in the Planning Scheme for details. If your home based business cannot meet these requirements you will not be able to run the business from your home. We encourage you to get in touch with Council as early as possible to discuss your situation.
Signage
A planning permit will likely be required for any business advertising signage relating to a home based business. We encourage you to contact Council to discuss the requirements on (03) 5772 0333.
