Sharps
Council provides a free sharps disposal service (for used hypodermic needles and syringes) and free sharps containers to Murrindindi Shire residents.
Containers can be picked up and dropped off at our offices, in Alexandra, Kinglake and Yea, Monday-Friday, during business hours.
For vulnerable customers, who are unable to pick up or drop off new sharps containers, please contact our Customer Contact team on (03) 5772 0333.
Not accepted
- sharps containers that are damaged, enclosed in other bags, or where sharps are visible
- cytotoxic waste containers (purple colour)
If you are unable to dispose of your medical waste at a Council office, please contact your local Community Health provider or hospital for further information.
Sharps safety tips
- store containers responsibly (away from children and pets)
- never dispose of sharps in general waste bins
- do not overfill sharps containers e.g. to a point where it is difficult to close the lid
- wash hands before and after handling sharps and containers

Commercial operators
- Commercial operators that use sharps for procedures/services they provide must arrange for sharps disposal via a private contractor.
