Residents in township zones across Murrindindi Shire will receive two new bins in April that will improve the way you recycle. However, we kindly ask that you don't start using these new bins until 30 June 2025.
You'll receive a green bin for food and garden organics only and a purple bin for glass bottles and jars.
You'll also receive a kitchen caddy to easily collect food scraps while cooking. The caddy can be emptied into your green bin when ready.
The new green bin will help make the most of your food scraps and garden clippings, so they can be turned into things like mulch and compost. The new purple bin will help make the most of your glass recycling, so it can turned into new glass bottles and jars.
From Monday 30 June 2025, you will need to put your food scraps and garden clippings into your new green bin.
You will also need to sort your glass bottles and jars into your new purple bin.
The food and garden organics collection service is required for your property. Starting soon, you won't be allowed to put food or organic waste in the red-lidded general rubbish bin. If your bin has the wrong items in it, you could be fined. These measures might seem strict, but they are necessary to reduce our growing waste problem. The first step is making sure we dispose of our waste responsibly and use the correct bins.
This means you will be sorting your waste into four streams:
- new food and garden organics bin (green bin)
- new glass recycling bin (purple lid)
- mixed recycling (yellow lid)
- general rubbish (red lid)
It might seem like a small thing to sort your waste properly, but it makes a big impact when we all do it correctly. Recycling well and reducing waste in the first place helps keep valuable resources out of landfill so they can be used again and again.
If you have not received your new bins by 2 May 2025, please contact Council by calling (03) 5772 0333.
