Properties in Rural Zones

Overview

Most residents in rural zones across Murrindindi Shire will receive new bins in April that will improve the way you recycle. However, we kindly ask that you don't start using these new bins until 30 June 2025.

Rural residents who currently receive a kerbside collection service will receive a purple bin for glass bottles and jars.

Some rural residents who don't currently have a kerbside collection service will receive a service from 30 June 2025 as our collection routes are being expanded. You'll receive three bins, a red bin for general rubbish, a yellow bin for mixed recycling and a purple bin for glass recycling.

A green bin for food and garden organics will be optional for residents in rural areas who live along Council's collection route. However, starting from 30 June, you won't be allowed to put food or organic waste in the red-lidded general rubbish bin. If your bin is found to have the wrong items, you could be fined. These measures might seem strict, but they are necessary to reduce our growing waste problem. The first step is making sure we dispose of our waste responsibly and use the correct bins.

What this means for you

If you live in a rural area along Council's collection route, you will need to sort your rubbish and recycling into three streams from 30 June 2025:

  • new glass recycling bin (purple lid)
  • mixed recycling (yellow lid)
  • general rubbish (red lid)

If you wish to receive a Food and Garden Organics service (green bin), it is essential that you opt in by 15 May 2025.

It might seem like a small thing to sort your waste properly, but it makes a big impact when we all do it correctly. Recycling well and reducing waste in the first place helps keep valuable resources out of landfill so they can be used again and again.

If you have not received your new bins by 2 May 2025, please contact Council by calling (03) 5772 0333.
