Council’s Alexandra Landfill is undergoing a significant development, with additional cells (compartments where waste is isolated from the environment) being constructed in the western area of the landfill. These additional cells are expected to provide an additional 30 years of capacity, based on current waste volumes.

The project is expected to receive final approval from the EPA to begin using the new cells in September 2024. Once in use, the old cells in the eastern area of the landfill will be closed and sealed to reduce landfill gas emissions.
