Murrindindi Shire Council is getting ready to celebrate its annual Community Awards at the start of National Volunteer Week, from 19-25 May.

From January to March, Council invited residents to nominate local individuals or community groups whose volunteering efforts inspire them. We received an impressive 45 nominations across four Community Award categories: Volunteer of the Year, Young Volunteer of the Year, Senior Volunteer of the Year, and Community Group or Initiative of the Year.

These nominees are the heart of our Shire, giving their time, skills, and passion to make our communities stronger, kinder, and more connected. We thank every nominator who helped shine a light on these local legends. To see the nominees and read their inspiring stories, visit the 2025 Awards Nominations page.

Council is hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner in Yea on Saturday 17 May, where the 2025 Community Award winners will be revealed. The festivities continue throughout the week, with free morning tea events across the Shire, bringing volunteers and community groups together to connect and be honoured.

The 2025 Community Awards will be presented by Mayor Damien Gallagher. You can watch the presentations live on Facebook, our website, or listen on UGFM radio, starting at 6.00 pm on Saturday 17 May. For more details, visit our Community Awards page.

Murrindindi Shire Council Mayor Damien Gallagher highlighted the strength of volunteering in our community.

“The incredible nominations we received this year prove the value of our volunteers across our communities. The Community Awards Selection Panel reviewed 45 nominations, six more than last year, demonstrating more people stepping up, giving back, and making a difference. These nominees have all made a positive impact on our communities, and we are all better off as a result. I encourage everyone to visit our website, read the nominee biographies, and see how much these wonderful volunteers have impacted our communities.”

“Murrindindi Shire has nearly double the state average of volunteering participation, making it clear how deeply community spirit runs through us. I cannot wait to celebrate the Community Award winners at the start of National Volunteer Week. While we’ll be recognising winners on the night, on behalf of the entire community, Council would like to acknowledge that every volunteer in our Shire is a champion.” added Mayor Gallagher.
