Murrindindi Shire Council is delighted to have secured funding to create the Alexandra East Development Plan (AEDP), which will guide the future use and development of 71 hectares of land in Alexandra’s major residential growth area. We are calling on community members to join the Community Reference Group and be involved in preparing this plan to ensure it considers local knowledge and meets the needs of the Alexandra community.

Murrindindi Shire, like many areas in Victoria, is facing housing shortages. The AEDP will provide a clear vision for the future of the land east of Wattle Street as well as areas around the Alexandra Hospital and the Menzies Services’ land north of the Goulburn Valley Highway. This will support coordinated, sustainable growth that integrates well with the existing township. This Plan aims to encourage well-designed residential development that contributes to housing affordability and boosts our local economy.

Interested community members are encouraged to submit an Expression of Interest to join our Community Reference Group by 12 noon on Friday 20 December 2024. We want to hear your thoughts on how the Development Plan can best meet the needs of the Alexandra community, how we can preserve key attributes of the area, what types of housing would be suitable, and any insights you have about the area’s heritage or environment. The group will meet several times in the first half of 2025.

There will also be many opportunities for the broader community to provide feedback on the options and draft plans as the project progresses next year. We look forward to your input and ideas.

This project is made possible with funding of $968,000 from the Australian Government’s Housing Support Program.

Murrindindi Shire Council’s Mayor and Red Gate Ward Councillor Damien Gallagher said “We value local knowledge in shaping the Alexandra East Development Plan. In Murrindindi Shire, we are tackling an emerging housing shortage and ageing demographics. Housing growth is crucial for the health of our community and economy, and the AEDP will facilitate approximately 700 new housing lots over time, attracting young families while making sure growth is appropriate, sustainable and addresses community needs well into the future. Development plans go beyond housing - they address issues like connectivity, drainage and infrastructure, services like telecommunications, water and sewerage, environmental issues and heritage considerations. Our goal is collaborate with local residents to develop a Plan that is fit for purpose.”
