Advocacy Priorities
One of Council’s important functions is to advocate on behalf of our community – either in the form of government funding to help our Shire prosper, or to bring about changes to policies that will improve how we live and work.
In adopting the 2021-2025 Council Plan, Council identified priority actions and a list of advocacy priorities for the next few years. We are now actively advocating to state and federal governments to help make these a reality. Our advocacy priorities are:
- Assistance with strategic planning to facilitate appropriate population growth, create sustainable development opportunities and address the shortage and affordability of housing
- Support to address some of the key challenges our businesses are facing, including attraction and retention of staff
- Funding assistance to combat climate change to reduce climate pollution and help us adapt to a changing climate
- Funding to allow us to implement the Lake Eildon Masterplan to revitalise Eildon and surrounds to increase its tourism potential
- Funding and policy change for waste and recycling reforms to help us move to a ‘circular economy’ where waste is minimised, while also ensuring affordability of the Victorian Government’s proposed new waste services for townships and localities across the Shire
- Increased government investment in community and mental health and wellbeing at a local level
- Increased government investment in mobile and internet services to eliminate mobile blackspots and provide fast, reliable broadband.
- Increased funding to improve Council's road network over the next 10 years.
- Support to address the grant funding inequity for Murrindindi Shire by supporting a review of the Victorian Local Government Grants Commission formula.
If you wish to discuss any of these advocacy priorities further, or you have something else you think Council should be advocating for on behalf of the community, please get in touch on (03) 5772 0333.
