Locusts

The Department of Agriculture is the relevant authority for dealing with locust issues.

The Australian Plague Locust (APL) are native insects that, if left unmanaged, can pose a serious threat to pastures, crops and horticulture. Landholders are responsible for reporting and managing locusts on their land through the Plague Locust Online Reporting Form or calling the Customer Contact Centre on 136 186.

While the APL may appear similar to grasshoppers, adult locusts can be identified by the big dark spot on the tip of their hind wings, an 'X' mark on their body and their bright red back legs. Their body color can be grey, brown, or green. Males are 25 to 30 mm long, while females are 30 to 45 mm long.

Information including how and when to treat locust infestations is available by visiting Agriculture Victoria's page on Australian plague locusts, calling the Australian Plague Locust Commission Hotline on 1800 635 962 or emailing them at aplc@aff.gov.au
