Victoria is home to a wide range of native and introduced species of bee's, meaning they can be difficult to identify as they can vary greatly in size, colour and shape. It is important to know that, while bees can be pests, not all species are and are very important to the balance of our environment.

While they are usually gentle and some species do not have stingers, some bee species may sting in self-defence. Swarms can be formed when large groups are travelling to find a new home and may stay in the one area for up to three days.

While we do not recommend removing swarms alone, bee's on private land is the responsibility of the landowner and, depending on severity, may require an at home treatment product or the services of a professional pest controller. You can find pest control services via an online directory such as Yellow Pages or you can contact the Bee Information Line (for $2.20 per minute including GST, and extra from a payphone or mobile phone) on 1902 241 059 for advice.

If you are concerned about a bee swarm or active bee hive on Council managed land please contact us on (03) 5772 0333 so we can have a professional assess and remove the infestation if required.
